How I engage

Three ways in.

Pick one, or sequence them
In depth

Magento, in detail.

01 · Hire a Magento developer, not an agency

Hire a Magento developer, not an agency

When you hire a Magento agency, you brief a director, get quoted senior rates, and receive junior code. When you hire me, the person you brief is the person who writes the code. I have been a Magento developer since 2014 — through Magento 1, the Magento 2 transition, and now the Hyvä era — and I have shipped for retailers like BrandAlley, Kathmandu, Daylesford and Run Auto Parts. You get agency-grade Adobe Commerce engineering at a freelancer's overhead, with one person accountable for the result.

02 · Magento 2 upgrades and migrations

Magento 2 upgrades and migrations

Version upgrades are where Magento budgets go to die — unless they are planned by someone who has done them repeatedly. I handle 2.4.x patch and minor upgrades, PHP version jumps, and full Magento 1 to Magento 2 replatforms with URLs, SEO equity, order history and PCI posture preserved. Every migration ships with a cut-over playbook, a rollback plan, and before-and-after benchmarks, so the business knows exactly what changed and what it cost.

03 · Magento support and maintenance

Magento support and maintenance

Most Australian merchants do not need a full agency retainer — they need a senior Magento developer on call who already knows their codebase. My support engagements cover security patching, module conflicts after upgrades, integration failures, and the steady backlog of small improvements that never justify a project. Response inside one working day, a real changelog, and no minimum-hours lock-in.

04 · Where I work

Where I work

I work with Magento and Adobe Commerce merchants across Australia — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and regional — and with brands in the UK, Europe and the US. Remote-first, overlap guaranteed with Australian business hours. Typical briefs:

  • 01Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source builds on 2.4.x
  • 02Hyvä theme builds and Luma-to-Hyvä conversions
  • 03Magento 1 → Magento 2 migrations with SEO preserved
  • 04B2B: company accounts, quotes, shared catalogues
  • 05Performance rescue: Core Web Vitals, Varnish, image pipelines
  • 06Ongoing support and maintenance retainers
Worth knowing

Honest scoping, before you spend

Magento is not always the answer — for a 200-SKU DTC brand, Shopify usually is. Every engagement starts with an honest read on whether Magento earns its keep for your catalogue, your promotions, and your team. If it does not, I will say so before you spend a dollar.

FAQ

Questions I get,
answered straight.

Missing one? Ask in the form — I reply within a working day.

01Is Magento still worth it in 2026?
For catalogues over a few thousand SKUs, complex promotions, or B2B workflows — yes. For a 200-SKU DTC brand, probably Shopify. I scope that question honestly on day one, and I will say so if Magento is the wrong tool for your brief.
02Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source?
Open Source covers most single-brand DTC work. Adobe Commerce earns its licence for B2B, page builder-heavy merchandising, staging workflows, or live search at scale. I run both, and can model the total cost of ownership before you commit.
03We are still on Magento 1 — how urgent is it?
Urgent. Magento 1 has been end-of-life since June 2020, which means no security patches, rising PCI-DSS exposure, and a steadily shrinking pool of engineers who will touch it. I have shipped several M1 → M2 migrations without losing URLs, SEO, or order history.
04What is Hyvä and why do you default to it?
Hyvä replaces the Luma frontend with a Tailwind + AlpineJS theme. Ten times fewer front-end dependencies, materially better Core Web Vitals, and a codebase developers actually want to open. It is my default for new Magento 2 builds unless you are locked into PWA Studio or a headless frontend.
05Can you work alongside our in-house team?
That is how most of my Magento work runs. I pair on PRs, set up code review cadence, and write handover documentation as I go. At Kathmandu I ran a sixteen-week engagement that left four in-house devs shipping the loyalty codebase themselves.
06Do you take on performance-only engagements?
Yes. My Rescue model is built for this — a four-to-eight week sprint targeting a specific outcome (green PageSpeed, faster checkout, a working search). I publish before/after benchmarks at handover.
07How much does a Magento developer cost?
Agencies in Australia typically charge $150–$250+ per hour and staff your project with a mix of seniorities. Working with me directly, you pay one senior rate for senior work — no project-manager markup, no juniors learning on your codebase. Audits are fixed-price from two weeks; rescues and rebuilds are quoted fixed or capped once scoped. Tell me the brief and you will have a number, not a range.
08Do you work with Magento merchants in Australia?
Yes — Australian retailers are a core part of my client base, alongside brands in the UK, Europe and the US. I work remote-first with guaranteed overlap with Australian business hours for standups, demos and launches, whether you are in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or regional.
